My goal with this writing effort was to provide enough information for the reader as a go-to resource for various subjects related to picking the right boat, buying a boat, and owning a boat. All proceeds from RELAX, IT’S ONLY A BOAT are donated to Shannon River Marine Heritage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization founded five years ago by Walt Schulz
to provide an accessible boating experience for mobility-challenged people and injured veterans. Shannon River Marine Heritage owns and operates the most fully adaptive 38’ boat in the U.S., Spirit of Pilar, converted for accessibility at Shannon Boat Company. Easy on-off ramp, motorized lift to the head and galley below, up/down motorized helm station, and many more accessible features are incorporated. SRMHF’s mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, age-related or other related mobility issues, as well as our veterans who have been wounded mentally or physically throughout their duties by providing access to the therapeutic and curative priceless freedom of the wind, sea and fresh air.
During the last five years, Spirit was berthed in Florida, offering scheduled fishing and boating excursions free to our wounded heroes and boating opportunities for all those with physical or mental challenges. Spirit now has years of experience bringing smiles to the faces of deserving people.
In 2023 Spirit returned to Rhode Island to be cosmetically restored and upgraded for the ultimate in accessibility. Thanks to the help of the many friends of SRMHF, Spirit is ready to work again, offering free fishing and boating excursions to veterans with disabilities, scheduled chartered fishing trips, and sleep afloat accommodations. Spirit is berthed in Fairhaven, Massachusetts.
